About this title

Storyline

Players from all over the world travel to Portland, Oregon to compete in the 10th annual Classic Tetris World Championship. A postman from Oklamhoma, a programmer from Japan, and a physicist from Iceland are among the top competitors in the ultimate block-stacking competition. Competitors have mastered the original version of Tetris programmed in 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The players are given the same piece sequences, and the higher score wins. Playing at top speeds, one misplaced piece can end a player's entire tournament. The tournament was graced by the presence of the inventor of Tetris himself, Alexi Pajitnov, who counted down the Final Match and personally award the trophies and grand prize to the Grand Champion and the Runner-up. During this condensed version of the Top-8, we see an amazing mix of young and old, with the 36 year-old postman from Oklahoma taking on the youngest competitor, 15 year-old "Batfoy" from Minnesota. Later on, Japanese college student and Tetris Grandmaster Greentea takes on defending champion Joseph Saelee, which culminates in the greatest Tetris match of all time, including an amazing "Double Max-out" in which both competitors achieved the ultimate score of 1 million points. The Final Match was between the defending champion, 17 year-old Joseph Saelee, and the 42 year-old Grandmaster Koryan from Japan. The Best-of-Five match went all five games, leaving the audience on the edge of their seats. When the dust settled, Joseph had managed to defend his title, defeating one of his Tetris idols in the process. The one-hour special was produced for ESPN by CTWC, Inc.
