About this title

Storyline

In January 1981, Ronald Reagan was sworn in as the 40th President of the United States. He quickly took the position of an intense communist hater. Reagan's Soviet counterpart, Leonid Brezhnev, was in his eighteenth year as general secretary. One was eager to bring about change. The other was old, tired, pressured, angry, and erratic. The newcomer and the old man couldn't stand each other. The Cold War got colder as the year went on. The fact that the world was more unstable than it had been in a long time didn't make things any better. In China, Mao Zedong's widow was sentenced to death. In Spain, there was an attempted coup d'état. Reagan was shot and badly wounded. For a few dramatic days, the KGB was suspected of the attack. All the while the Soviet Union feared that the assassination attempt on Reagan meant that someone was trying to take over the nuclear codes in the United States - to direct the entire arsenal at Moscow. But Reagan recovered. Spain remained a democracy. The death penalty for Mao's widow was converted to a life sentence. And Björn Borg won his sixth title at the French Open. The world seemed to be enjoying itself a little better. If it had not been for the Communist hater Reagan. And the Reagan hater Brezhnev. What the world needed least of all in October 1981 was a spark, similar to the shootings in Sarajevo, the ones that led to ten million deaths. What the world got was a stranded Soviet submarine in a Swedish military protection area in the Blekinge archipelago in the south of Sweden. Ten million deaths would be a whisper by comparison. If the event degenerated. WHISKEY ON THE ROCKS is the alternative truth about what really happened during those ten dramatic days in October and November 1981.
