About this title

Storyline

There is another Earth. It is in a terrible state. Those still alive have begun a process to try and escape to Our Earth. This involves passing through a cosmic membrane of the unknowable - we'll call it the 'divine darkness'. Their probing experiments begin with attempts to send information, then machines, animals, and finally human beings. Anything sent through the membrane, however, displaces divine darkness into our world, altering what was sent, and its point of entry. Data on the Other Earth's reproductive methods could literally spill into a doctor's ear in Our Earth, convincing them a pregnant patient is about to give birth to a monster (who says humans on this other world look like us...?). Or, imagine the recording of an unknown song in an unknown language simply merging with the hull of an icebreaker, ricocheting around the ship until the crew goes mad trying to escape this other-worldly, unrelenting sound. Only one person, Astrid Bergström, has the faintest idea about the existence of the divine darkness. And that knowledge has permanently, completely changed her. Black Ice is the story of a small ad-hoc Canadian unit of military, corporate, and scholarly professionals. With a small budget and skeptical oversight from Ottawa, their task is to investigate and defend against a seemingly supernatural threat that is warping the land, animals, even entire communities in the Canadian Arctic circle - nearly 1/12 of the Earth's surface. Extreme weather and sanity-buckling encounters are further complicated by increasing encroachments by the US, China, and Russia upon the thawing ice of Canadian territorial waters. These great powers will only have more reason to interfere with Canadian sovereignty if they learn of this bizarre new phenomenon, which could grow to threaten the entire globe. The series explores the difficulty of trying to protect your people when the definition of "your people" keeps expanding and contracting depending on the situation. As the protagonists learn how to navigate their own prejudices and those of others, they struggle to perform a unique, terrifying job they wouldn't wish on their worst enemies.
