About this title

Storyline

A journey to the depths of the Black Sea yields the greatest series of ancient shipwrecks ever discovered. In 2015, an international team of scientists began a 3 year exploration of the Black Sea in search of evidence of the ancient empires that sailed their ships into unknown waters in pursuit of trade, treasure and conquest. This documentary captures a series of astonishing discoveries made; a treasure trove of shipwrecks uniquely preserved that date back two and a half thousand years to the Greek and Roman empires, culminating in maritime archaeology's greatest ever wreck. A fully intact Roman wreck, perfectly preserved in the anoxic waters of the Black Sea. Four years in the making, this television series traces a search for mankind's origins. Our cameras venture two kilometres beneath the surface of this mysterious and little known sea. The films reveal unique discoveries of prehistoric buried landscapes and perfectly preserved wrecks dating from as long ago as the 8th Century. The series follows the highs and lows of a handpicked international team of world class scientists on a journey of discovery. The story blends their adventure at sea with an epic tale of the past. Black Sea MAP has been one of the largest maritime archaeological projects ever undertaken, and this is an opportunity for us to showcase what has been discovered and what research is still ahead. The event includes a talk by Prof. Jon Adams & Prof. Alice Roberts, hands on activities including Virtual Reality dives onto the shipwrecks, and a presentation of some of the footage from our amazing documentary.
