Storyline

This four-part documentary allows viewers unprecedented access to the patients and staff of the South London and Maudsley, the world's oldest psychiatric institution. `Bedlam' also reflects how mental illness has been perceived historically, and while treatment has changed dramatically over the past 800 years, a stigma undoubtedly still remains. Episodes cover a specialist anxiety unit at Bethlem Royal Hospital, a crisis ward at Lambeth Hospital, the mentally ill who live in the community, and a psychiatric ward for over 65s at the South London and Maudsley.
